What are the characteristics of merino wool?
Merino wool has many great properties, which makes using clothing and accessories made from it a good choice for you and your baby. Are you curious why I highly recommend merino wool products for your baby? Below you can read all the properties and benefits of merino wool!
What are the thermal properties of merino wool?
- Wool insulates: Wool has the natural capacity to trap warm air, making it an effective insulator. This keeps your baby's body warm in cold conditions.
- Breathability: Wool can absorb and evaporate moisture, making it breathable. This helps regulate body temperature by wicking away excess heat and moisture, which is comfortable in varying temperatures.
- Temperature regulation: Wool adapts to body temperature, meaning it feels cool in warmer conditions and warm in colder environments. It maintains a comfortable balance between warmth and freshness.
- Natural fiber structure: The fiber structure of wool has small air pockets, which increases its insulating capacity. This contributes to its heat-retaining properties.
How can merino wool be self-cleaning?
- Self-cleaning: Because merino wool has self-cleaning properties, it doesn't need to be washed often. How is wool self-cleaning? Merino wool contains lanolin. This is a natural fat in the wool, which makes the wool dirt and water repellent. Lanolin acts as a kind of natural soap when it comes into contact with moisture.
- Antibacterial: Lanolin in the wool is antibacterial, which means odors are less likely to penetrate the wool, and it therefore smells fresh for longer. Do you still want to freshen up your wool item? Usually, a night outside or in a humid bathroom is enough.
- Merino wool doesn't itch: Due to its higher wool density, merino wool is very soft and doesn't itch. Wool is hypoallergenic, and the chance of an allergy is very small.
- Still want to wash your wool item? Merino wool can be hand washed or machine washed on a wool cycle with a wool detergent. Treat a stain with gall soap. If you don't wring it out and let it dry flat, it won't felt, and your wool will stay beautiful for the longest time. Merino wool does not shrink easily if you follow the washing instructions.
Merino wool at Natural Cosy Kids
These wonderful properties mentioned above make merino wool a popular choice for clothing and accessories for yourself or your baby, such as the pouch top, the romper, wrap shirt, baby trousers or hat. Or for accessories such as the play mat made of teddy merino wool or the changing mat cover or stroller insert, or the Warmtemaantjes with a cover of (teddy) merino wool. Because it not only provides warmth but is also breathable and comfortable for various weather conditions. Merino wool is suitable for year-round use.
What is mulesing-free wool?
At Natural Cosy Kids we use mulesing-free wool and organic where possible. Mulesing-free means that no skin is cut away from the sheep's rear (often without anesthesia) to create a wool-free area, preventing feces and urine from getting into the wool. Mulesing is a very painful treatment for the sheep.
